B.C. Launches Short-Term Rental Registry

British Columbia is introducing a mandatory registry for short-term rental operators on platforms like Airbnb and VRBO, with enforcement measures set to begin this year. All operators must display a registration number by May 1, with non-compliant listings removed starting June 1.

Annual fees will vary, ranging from $100 for resident hosts, $450 for those who live elsewhere, to $600 for strata hotels. Early registrants can benefit from discounts, with a 50% reduction for those signing up by Feb. 28.

This initiative aims to combat illegal rentals and prioritize housing for residents over speculation.

The registry complements municipal rules and provides local governments with data to enforce compliance more effectively.

However, it is important to note the provincial registry comes on top of short-term rental rules and fees set out by municipalities.
