Reimagining Central Lonsdale

Jan. 13, 2025 | News, Policies, & Regulations | By The Rossettis

The City of North Vancouver is embarking on an exciting journey to transform Central Lonsdale into a dynamic, vibrant hub that truly embodies the spirit of a “great street.” This ambitious project aims to enhance the area as a place where people can live, work, visit, and play while celebrating its unique character and potential for growth.

At the heart of this initiative is a commitment to collaboration. The City is partnering with the renowned urban design and strategy firm Gehl and Associates to envision a more inclusive and vibrant future for Central Lonsdale. Stretching from Chesterfield Avenue to St. Georges Avenue, and from the Trans-Canada Highway to Victoria Park, the project area represents a central artery of North Vancouver, brimming with opportunity.

Why Central Lonsdale?

Central Lonsdale already plays a pivotal role in the lives of residents, workers, and visitors. The area is a bustling corridor of shops, restaurants, businesses, and residential spaces. But the City believes it has the potential to become even more: a lively, welcoming destination that meets the needs of the community while fostering economic vitality and inclusivity.

To achieve this, the Lonsdale Great Street Project seeks to strengthen its identity as a hub for diverse attractions and events, ensuring that it remains a place where businesses thrive and people gather to connect. It’s also an opportunity to address challenges, including preserving light-industrial areas, supporting local businesses, and integrating future growth in a way that enhances the character of the neighborhood.

Your Voice Matters

A central part of this initiative is community input. During Phase 1, the “listen and learn” stage, the City is inviting everyone to share their ideas and experiences. Whether you’re a resident, a business owner, or a visitor, your perspective is essential in shaping the future of Central Lonsdale.

Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Complete a Survey: Share your thoughts via the online survey, open until January 31, 2025. Prefer paper? Download and print the survey or pick one up at City Hall.
  • Attend In-Person Events: Stop by Civic Plaza on January 17 or 18 to chat with staff, enjoy a hot beverage, and share your insights. Alternatively, visit the Community Open House at City Hall on February 20 to discuss ideas with staff and project planners.
  • Subscribe for Updates: Stay informed about project progress and upcoming engagement opportunities by signing up for email updates.

Shaping the Vision Together

The feedback gathered during this first phase will help define the priorities and aspirations for Central Lonsdale. It will be combined with economic and technical studies to create an actionable plan for the area. In spring, Phase 2 will see these ideas refined into preliminary directions, with additional opportunities for public input.

This collaborative process ensures the Lonsdale Great Street Project reflects the values and vision of the community, setting the stage for an exciting transformation that benefits everyone.
