Top 5 Budget Friendly Holiday Activities on the North Shore

The holiday season is here, and there’s no better time to soak in the festive spirit without breaking the bank. The North Shore offers a range of free and affordable activities that capture the magic of Christmas while showcasing the area’s natural beauty and community spirit. Here are my top five budget friendly holiday activities to enjoy this season:

1. Shipyards Christmas Market

Located in Lower Lonsdale, the Shipyards Christmas Market is a must-visit during the holiday season. The area comes alive with twinkling lights, a giant Christmas tree, and festive decorations. Enjoy live music, pop-up vendors, and holiday-themed activities. While there’s plenty to shop for, strolling through the market, sipping on a hot drink (bring your own thermos!), and soaking in the festive vibes won’t cost a thing. Don’t forget to bring your ice skates and go for a twirl on the free rink at Shipyards Plaza!

Local Tip: Bring your ice skates for free skating at the Shipyards Plaza! Too busy? Pack your cocoa to go and take a stroll west along the oceanside Spirit Trail, visiting the festive float homes at Mosquito Creek Marina.

2. Dundarave Festival of Lights

Take a stroll along Dundarave Beach in West Vancouver, where you’ll find the annual Festival of Lights. The beach transforms into a winter wonderland with beautifully decorated Christmas trees, each sponsored and decorated by local businesses and organizations. The festival supports local charities, but simply wandering among the trees and enjoying the ambiance is completely free. Pro tip: visit at sunset for a breathtaking view of the lights against the ocean and mountains.

Local Tip: Be sure to check out the calendar of events (here >>). Bonfire night gets lit!

3. Nature Walk at Lighthouse Park

While not a traditional holiday activity, a walk through Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver can feel magical during the winter season. The towering trees, moss-covered trails, and stunning ocean views create a serene atmosphere, especially on crisp, clear days. Bundle up and bring a thermos of hot cocoa to make the experience extra special. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some festive decorations or holiday-themed photo setups created by locals.

Local Tip: Horseshoe Bay recently completed their new waterfront park, a great place to watch BC Ferries come and go. Pop in to Goldie's for a yummy holiday treat!

4. Cypress Mountain Trestle Bridge

For a unique and Instagram-worthy holiday outing, head to the Cypress Mountain Trestle Bridge. This hidden gem offers spectacular views of snow-dusted trees and the surrounding mountains. The trestle bridge, part of the Baden-Powell Trail, is accessible and makes for a memorable winter adventure. Looking to kill more time?

Local Tip: Stop on your way up (or down) at the 'Pop-Up Village' for more great views of the city, and enjoy a pizza and festive drink at the warm and cozy 'Shed'!

5. Mt Seymour Snowshoeing

If snow is in the forecast, head up to Mt Seymour for a snowshoeing adventure. While the organized snowshoe tours require tickets, you can explore the trails on your own if you have your own snowshoes. The marked trails near the parking lot offer stunning views of the snowy forests and are perfect for beginners or families looking for a low-cost winter activity. Don’t forget to dress warmly and pack some snacks for a cozy break on the trail.

Local Tip: Seymour offers the best tubing and sledding on the North Shore - check it out, it's totally tubular!

The North Shore truly shines during the holiday season, offering a mix of festive fun and natural beauty. These free activities are perfect for families, couples, or solo adventurers looking to celebrate the season without stretching their budgets. Whether you’re wandering through a Christmas market or snowshoeing in the mountains, these experiences are sure to make your holidays memorable. Happy holidays, and enjoy the magic of the North Shore!
